General Description
Palomar Airport Hangar is a uniquely suited hanger facilities constructed to house corporate jets and give tenants the opportunity to lease professional office space as well. The facility allows jet set executives to conduct business in appropriately suited office spaces further allowing them the versatility of being at the airport to take off in a moments notice.
This facility greatly enhanced and modernized the Carlsbad airport itself. Building on this site required demolition of old and structurally unstable T-Hangers.
The new facility has approximately 160,000 square foot hangar space, with approximately 70,000 square feet of office space.
This project was constructed of steel using a hybrid design of structural and pre-engineered steel. It also employs the use of foam insulated wall panels. These panels also finish the inside of the structure with a metal liner panel look.
Special Challenges
Some of the unique challenges of this project were the 110’ Mega Doors. These are state of the art hanger doors which are skinned with fabric and require extremely tight installation tolerances. Airport safety was a consideration which had to be considered due to line of site for the control tower. The line of site challenge required the hangers to step numerous times allowing the control tower the appropriate line of site. Further challenges included the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s earthquake codes. This requirement exceeded local codes which did not require the FEMA standard.
The FEMA requirement furthered the design challenge due to the volatility of the steel prices in 2004. This volatility posed unique challenges in keeping the project within a buildable budget as steel prices climbed to record levels during the design stage. Miles Construction was able to get through these complex obstacles and get the hangars completed.
We consider challenges like this project part of our forte.
